Tempered Glass

When it comes to security in commercial settings, tempered glass installation is a top choice. With its versatility, it can be seamlessly incorporated into various commercial installations like glass curtain walls, office partitions, and other architectural projects.

What is a Tempered Glass?

Tempering is a heating process that can be applied to annealed glass doors to strengthen it. After being heated in the oven at a certain temperature it becomes tempered. Tempered glass usually have a stamp or a mark in the corner of the glass which determines the glass is tempered. This gives a clarity of manufacturer of glass and aluminum frames  and would help to identify that it meets the code of conduct.

If the glass is tempered it will also break differently into small pieces. This is why tempered glass are mandatory component in doors and windows that require guard load / safety requirements to suit the Ontario Building code

Why Use Tempered Glass?

Tempered Glass is most typically used at many levels. For instance the street level main floor, commercial window applications (ICI), and is used for all door glazing and entrance glazing side light conditions. Tempered Glass is also required in situations where a guard (guard load) is required and not present. For example when there is less than the specified distance requirement between the finished floor and the bottom of the window in an upper floor window that has the knee wall, as mandated by the OBC.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages

Strength and Impact Resistance

Tempered glass is approximately four times stronger than regular glass. It can withstand significant impact and is less prone to breakage.

Safety

It shatters into small, granular pieces rather than sharp shards, reducing the risk of serious injury.

Thermal Resistance

Tempered glass has excellent thermal resistance, making it capable of withstanding sudden temperature changes without cracking.

Durability

Due to its manufacturing process, tempered glass is more resistant to scratches, abrasions, and general wear and tear compared to regular glass.

Code Compliance

Choosing tempered glass ensures compliance with safety standards, avoiding potential legal issues and liabilities.

Disadvantages

Limited Modification

Once tempered glass is manufactured, it cannot be altered. Any cutting, drilling, or shaping must be done prior to the tempering process.

Difficulty in Resizing:

If precise measurements are not taken during the initial installation, replacement may be necessary in case of size discrepancies.

Vulnerability to Edge Damage

Special care must be taken during installation and handling to avoid chipping or breakage at the edges.

Higher Cost

The increased strength and safety features justify the higher cost, but it may impact budget considerations.

Difficult Repair

If tempered glass breaks, it cannot be repaired. Instead, it needs to be replaced entirely.
